PlayStation Eyes New Investment For PC Mobile Push

Sony is producing a growing number of game adaptations, with this year's "Uncharted" movie grossing more than $400 million globally and a TV series based on "The Last of Us" franchise from its Naughty Dog studio launching on HBO next year.

Fans of the home team Gimnasia La Plata and visiting Boca Juniors had struggled earlier to enter the already full stadium when police resorted to firing rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the fans.

"Further investments in areas that will strengthen the expansion on to PC, on to mobile and into live services, that's definitely a possibility for us," Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, told Reuters in an interview without providing further detail.

"If Sony can pull off what they did with single player experiences but (as) multiplayer experiences across platforms, on the PC, on consoles and maybe even on the phone, then all bets are off," said Toto, pointing to the success of online games such as Fortnite from Epic Games.

The incident, according to Argentine network TNT Sports, was caused by the upsetting reaction from fans when a police officer allegedly pushed a girl. Fans scuffled with security forces who responded by firing rubber bullets and tear gas.  Meanwhile, fans were still attempting to enter the stadium, but the entrance gates were already closed.

Carlos Regueiro attended the match with his family and fell ill due to the effects of the tear gas that had been fired after the police tried to get the crowd to retreat from the field during the Gimnasia La Plata and Boca Juniors match at Juan Carmelo Zerillo Stadium in the Buenos Aires town of La Plata.

The radical shift is reflected in its recent deals including the $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie, the studio behind the multiplayer "Destiny" franchise, which Sony operates outside its PlayStation Studios network.

'My dad never had a heart condition like the news reports say. My dad died on the field. They did not assist him, he was alive. They let him die there. Justice for my dad, all those who are responsible have to pay,' she wrote on her Facebook page. 'The police killed him. He was on lying on the floor, he couldn't breathe and a tear gas was fired at his side ...' 

TOKYO, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Sony Group Corp's gaming business is looking at fresh investment to bolster its push into PC and mobile, a senior executive said, as the PlayStation 5 maker competes for talent with deep-pocketed rivals and as industry dealmaking heats up.

"You should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost, but it's also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities," Hulst said of the FromSoftware investment.

Some fans claimed there had been overselling of tickets amid excitement over the encounter between two teams fighting for the league title, saying people likely became anger when they could not get into the stadium.

Sony, whose studios are known for single player console games such as "Spider-Man" and "God of War", has outlined ambitious plans to release titles on PC and mobile and offer live service games, which provide continuous updated play.

In its security protocols, FIFA advises against the use of tear gas in or around stadiums in order to avoid risky situations such as in La Plata or in the Indonesian city of Malanga last Saturday, when many of the dead were crushed to death during the stampede of fans.
